Tangier or Chefchaouen from Casablanca by high-speed train: which day trip?
Updated October 19, 2026 · 5 min read
If you want to leave Casablanca for a day by high-speed train, choose Tangier. The Tangier day tour by high-speed train costs €129 per person, is listed as one day, and has 4.3 out of 5 from 156 reviews, the most of the Tangier train trips. Chefchaouen on a day trip works on paper and costs €249, but the day is very long and the town is better with a night.

The train
Al Boraq, Morocco’s high-speed line, opened on 15 November 2018 and cut the Casablanca to Tangier journey from 4 hours 45 minutes to 2 hours 10, according to Wikipedia. It runs from Casa-Voyageurs through Rabat and Kenitra to Tanger-Ville, so the trip is two journeys of roughly two hours and ten minutes, one each way, before you see anything. Timetables and fares change: check them on the ONCF site, because this article cannot give a current fare.
For a day in Tangier that means early out and late back. The train is the most comfortable part of the day, but at two hours and ten minutes each way it takes more than four hours of it.
What each trip says it covers
| Offer | Duration | From | Rating | What it says it covers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tangier day tour by high-speed train | 1 day | €129 | 4.3 (156 reviews) | Cap Spartel, Caves of Hercules, Kasbah, medina, local guide |
| Chefchaouen day trip by high-speed train | 14 hours – 1 day | €249 | 4.4 (75 reviews) | hotel transfers, lunch, medina, Ras el Maa waterfall, Uta el Hamam square |
| Shared guided day trip to Chefchaouen | 15 hours | €237.77 | 4.8 (14 reviews) | blue medina, Great Mosque, kasbah, lunch on selected options |
A word on the Chefchaouen offers. The train line ends at Tangier, and Chefchaouen lies in the Rif mountains, so the trip needs a road leg on top of the train. The listings do not spell out where one ends and the other begins, so open the booking page and look at the timeline before you rely on a time. The shared guided trip does not say whether it uses the train at all. At 14 to 15 hours, with a rating from only 14 reviews, it is a long day with little evidence behind it.
Two other Tangier train trips exist, at €125 and €152.18, but they have 11 and 2 reviews and ratings of 3.9 and 2.8. That is too little to recommend them over the first.
Why I would pick Tangier
Tangier is one place with a clear programme: the medina and the kasbah, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. The train does the long part for you. For a day trip the numbers hold up: €129 for the trip, a rating of 4.3, and the most reviews of any such offer.
Why Chefchaouen is better with a night
Chefchaouen is a town of about 46,000 people at around 600 metres in the Rif foothills, famous for its blue medina. Its pleasure is slowness, and a day that starts before dawn and ends late leaves little time to be slow. If the blue town is why you came, stay a night there instead of squeezing it into a single day.
When a day trip is not worth it
If you are not comfortable with a very early start and a late return, skip both. For less money you get a calmer day closer to home: Rabat is about an hour away by train and the guided trip costs €65. All options out of the city are on our Casablanca day trips page.
